Reka - Home Office Careers

Hi, I’m Reka, and I’m an Asylum Move-on Liaison Officer (AMLO). I support refugees who have received a settle status decision. Refugees can be fleeing conflict, violence or persecution, and I provide tailored advice and practical guidance to help them move from hotel accommodation into the community.

Since joining the team in October 2024, I’ve found this to be one of the most impactful and rewarding roles I’ve held.

From Teacher to Legal Consultant and Beyond

My career began in education, following a strong family tradition. I qualified as a primary school teacher in Hungary, where I developed communication skills, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. Teaching was fulfilling, but my dream was to study law — a field that fascinated me for its structure, logic, and ability to empower others.

After graduating in law, I became a legal consultant, providing personalised advice and advocacy to individuals. This strengthened my ability to analyse complex information and offer practical guidance, while deepening my understanding of legal systems.

After relocating to the UK, I took on a personal assistant role and later as Head Office Manager. These positions helped me develop a wide range of transferable skills — such as planning, organisation, and stakeholder communication which now directly support my work as an AMLO.

Purposeful work with flexibility

I came across the AMLO role at a time when I was looking for something more meaningful — a role that combined my people skills and legal background. From day one, the team was welcoming and supportive, and I soon knew this was the place where I could contribute, grow, and feel part of something bigger.

My role involves helping refugees transition from their current accommodation signposting them to relevant services — such as registering with a GP, opening a bank account, and accessing local services and support networks.

Tuesdays to Thursdays, I travel to accommodation sites across the country, meeting refugees face-to-face. Every day is different, and the work is as diverse as the people we help. I work at home on Mondays and Fridays which allows time for me to action admin, planning, and training activity. Travel can sometimes be tiring, but the difference we make means every journey feels worthwhile.

The role calls for adaptability, emotional intelligence, strong organisational skills, and a good understanding of support services within each local area. We often meet people in vulnerable situations, and we never forget that behind every case is a person with a story. This principal guides everything we do — working with empathy, respect, and professionalism.

It’s a position of responsibility, but we’re given the tools, training, and emotional support to manage it well. Whether through formal learning or day-to-day experience in the field, the learning never stops and for me, that’s one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

Compassion, Connection, and Career Growth

What I enjoy most is the visible impact of the work. Helping someone take steps forward during a critical life transition is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to be trusted and I approach each case with care and genuine compassion.

The AMLO team is one of the most committed and compassionate teams I’ve worked with. We support each other, share knowledge, and build a culture of trust and encouragement. It truly feels like one big family. Being part of such a team gives me the confidence to grow, take initiative, and bring my best to every day.

If you’re looking for a role that’s people-focused, purposeful, and constantly evolving, the Home Office is the place to be. You’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired — and your passion for helping others will be both valued and strengthened. You’re never alone in this role.
