Hi, my name is Nicola and I have been an HR Business Partner at the Home Office since July 2021.
I moved to the Home Office as I wanted to experience working in a department with a direct link to our personal lives – from applying for and receiving a passport through to reducing and preventing crime.
I currently work as an HR Business Partner supporting the Digital, Data and Technology teams. I spend most of my time working with the business delivering their programmes of work. I do not have a digital technical background but at the heart of all of programmes are our people, and that is where I support.
There is no typical day. In between meetings I try and get through my to do list which can involve connecting different areas, trying to find some thinking time around how to influence my business as well as regular check-ins with Directors.
The thing I love most about my job is when you can see that a conversation you have had with someone has really made a difference and your professional opinion has been sought, considered and acted upon. I love talking and listening so this is the perfect job for me!
There are lots of benefits to working in the Home Office but the one that is most important to me is the ability to work around my family commitments. I work part-time so experience the best of both worlds – a fulfilling job and being around for my children. If you were thinking of a job in the Home Office, I would say just go for it. The people are friendly and supportive, there are lots of opportunities and the development I have already received has been fantastic.
