I studied Law at university with the aim of becoming a solicitor. However, after graduating I worked in a law firm for six months and found I did not really enjoy the role.
I had always wanted to work for the Civil Service and was interested in an IT role, so in 2018 I applied for an operational role with Border Force based at Gatwick Airport.
Working in an IT team in a fast-paced operational environment was really exciting, and I stayed there for nearly three years. I then went to work in the Programme Management Office supporting the Digital Services at the Border project.
I currently work in a business support role as the single point of contact for continuous professional development (CPD) within the IT Operations community. I support colleagues’ CPD needs, which includes helping them find courses they may want to complete, creating SharePoint pages and helping with events run for the IT Operations community.
I really enjoy working with my team as they are very supportive, and I really like being able to help colleagues in wider IT Operations teams. Having worked in three different areas in the Home Office I can certainly say the people are friendly and welcoming. This helps me enjoy my job and also keeps me motivated to work hard and help everyone.
The Home Office is great because it really encourages staff to work on their CPD to develop the skills that will benefit them in their day-to-day jobs. I would definitely recommend that people apply to work in the Home Office, as it’s a great place to work and it is full of opportunities to develop yourself and learn new skills.
