Hi, my name is Jacob and I’m a Border Force Officer working in the International Trade team.
I originally decided to apply for this role because I wanted a career that would offer job security and the opportunity for progression. I’ve worked in this team for over two years now.
At school I had many interests, but I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go in. I ended up taking drama A Levels and then went to the International School of Screen Acting in London whilst working at a pet shop. I had multiple jobs over the years but not the career progression opportunities I had hoped for.
A close friend who worked at Border Force told me what a great place to work it was and how much he enjoyed it, so I applied and was offered an Assistant Officer apprenticeship position. Six months later, I was promoted to the Border Force Officer position. I’ve also been given many opportunities to change role and try other types of Border Force work, which has been interesting and beneficial for my development.
In the International Trade team, a typical day involves processing travel documents and conducting examinations on vehicles to confirm that the goods declared on the customs entry is correct. We carry out in-depth checks and scrutinise paperwork provided to establish the authenticity.
Working in this flexible and supportive environment has allowed me to maintain my responsibilities as a father to my one-year-old daughter, and my team are understanding of my commitment to attend regular therapy sessions to support my wellbeing. There is always someone to support you when you need it, and the Home Office puts its colleagues first when it comes to challenging circumstances or mental health difficulties.
I’d also say that compared to similar roles out there, the pay and employer pension contribution are brilliant.
If you’re considering whether to apply for a job with Border Force, just do it! It’s a supportive environment with many benefits, from the salary right through to growing and progressing your career.
