Hi, my name is Amnaa and I’m a Border Force Assistant Officer working in the International Trade team.
The main reason I chose to work here was to make a difference. I also wanted a career that offered job satisfaction, and I knew that would be attainable working in this type of role. I’ve worked in Border Force for over six months.
I previously worked in retail telecommunications as a store manager. I enjoyed this work but didn’t feel I was making a real difference. I actually heard about Border Force opportunities from a customer who was already working for them. I took a chance and applied and was offered a position.
Every day is different and varied. I can go from working in the office one day to conducting examinations on vehicle goods the next. The laws and regulations are regularly updated, so we’re always having to stay up to date with new legislation.
I have seen and learned things I would never have come across if I wasn’t a part of Border Force. I enjoy working with a team of people from all walks of life that I can rely on for support and guidance.
I have family commitments outside of work, and Border Force has offered me a great work life balance and the flexibility to take care of my personal responsibilities and still do my job around this.
I’ve been able to focus on my development through a variety of training programs during my time with Border Force, including one to one sessions with my peers and mentor. Colleagues can also have access to apprenticeships, a range of training, including first aid and mental health awareness to name a few.
The Home Office has a great benefits package which includes an annual leave allowance of 25 days on appointment, rising with service. You may also receive reward vouchers when you’ve done a good job – which is motivating. Additionally, the base salary is great, and you’ll get a fantastic pension that you wouldn’t find in many places.
If you’re thinking about a career with Border Force, go for it. The job is incredibly rewarding and provides many opportunities. I would not change my role for the world.
