Hi, my name is Gordon and I’ve been working in the IT and support sector for over 25 years. I started my career in 1997 with Oracle while completing my MSc in Computer Science and Applications. Over the years, I was given the opportunity to work in a variety of roles including Sales and Project Management. This provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the full project lifecycle.
After many years working at an IT service provider, I found myself in the unique position of transitioning to the Home Office in 2023. In my current role, I support the Home Office’s HR and finance systems, which are critical to the department’s day-to-day operations. My daily tasks are varied, ranging from incident management, where I assess and troubleshoot user issues, to problem management, which involves diagnosing and resolving recurring technical issues. A key part of my role is providing guidance to team members, whether through mentoring or offering advice. The work is often unpredictable, and while some issues can be complex and take time to resolve, others can be quickly addressed.
One of the things I enjoy most about my role is the sense of accomplishment that comes from solving problems. I enjoy evaluating evidence to pinpoint the root cause of an issue and finding effective solutions. I take satisfaction in knowing that my work makes a difference.
The flexibility of remote working has made it easier to stay connected with my team and the wider Home Office community.
Being part of the Home Office has been a rewarding experience. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects. Each day offers something new, and I’m proud to contribute to the smooth running of critical systems that impact thousands of people. One of the greatest benefits of working for the Home Office is the sense of stability it provides. As a civil servant, I benefit from a strong pension scheme and enjoy a supportive work environment that has positively impacted my mental well-being.
The opportunities for training and professional development are also a major benefit, and I look forward to further developing my skills and advancing my career within the organisation. Overall, the supportive culture, the opportunities for growth, and the sense of community make the Home Office an exceptional place to work.
