I decided to leave the private sector and start working for the Home Office because I wanted to work on products that I find fulfilling and meaningful. This move was easy because I had a lot of transferrable skills to bring to my role as I previously worked in telecommunications, mostly in Product, Propositions and Marketing.
I really enjoy my job and the team I manage are such a great bunch! I particularly enjoy engaging with stakeholders across the Home Office and supporting junior trainees on their placements. Although no day is the same, generally my role covers the following:
- Setting direction for the product team and owing the roadmap.
- Managing priorities for workstreams.
- Working with stakeholders, of varying seniority, across the Home Office and beyond.
- Leading agile meetings such as planning, daily stand-ups and retrospectives
Working with cross-government teams to share knowledge and working practices.
What I enjoy most about my role and working at the Home Office is that the work is challenging and rewarding but it isn’t quite as stressful as I found the private sector to be. You can forge your own path and muster support when you need it to get things done. It helps to be motivated, adaptable and flexible.
