We’re recruiting experienced Team Leaders and Senior Team Leaders to join our Illegal Migrations Operations Command (IMOC) at Portishead. The IMOC will work across the Migration and Borders system and the Home Office to implement and then operate the processes within the new Illegal Migration Act.  

This role is within the new end to end case working function called Illegal Migration, Relocation & Returns Service (IMRRS), which is currently being established. 

The role will be responsible for managing the cases of individuals who fall under the duty to remove, from point of claim to their relocation. That relocation may be to a safe third country, the country of which they are a national, or one for which they hold a passport / identity document. It involves ensuring that we have the most effective systems to progress both cases in detention and those released into the community awaiting relocation or removal.; 

This is an exciting time to join the unit which will be operational in line with the anticipated commencement of the Illegal Migration Act.  The closing date for applications is 30th April.

Job description

You will be working within a fast-paced department, providing leadership to case working teams in your unit, collaborating closely with Senior Caseworkers to deliver objectives. A strong delivery focus and emotional resilience is essential. 

As a Team Leader, you will be responsible for managing a team, leading by example, providing support and working to develop your team to help them deliver on shared goals and targets, whilst enabling them to achieve sustainable outcomes. 

The ability to adapt to changing priorities is essential, so flexibility is vital.  

Some of the key tasks of this role include: 

  • Leading and managing operational teams to support the achievement of key individual objectives and quality standards
  • Prioritising workloads in accordance with operational procedures to achieve targets and standards
  • Continuously improving efficiency and effectiveness of operations
  • Ensuring the team works effectively with operational partners and stakeholders
  • Effectively identify and manage business risks
  • Supporting the delivery of change across the organisation
  • Effectively leading, driving, and coaching teams through the change process 

For the Senior Team Leader roles, in addition to the above, you will be: 

  • Working as part of a senior management team, work collaboratively and positively to instil resilience in a fast-paced, pressurised environment. 
  • Supporting setting the direction for local operational planning and operational delivery ensuring the team’s output remains of the highest standard. 
  • Taking a proactive approach in establishing and building positive relationships with stakeholders in order to ensure any handoffs to other parts of the business contain necessary and relevant detail. 
  • Being responsible for direct line-management and development of HEOs, countersigning responsibility for EOs and AOs; dealing with all staffing matters which arise. 
  • Setting the direction for all matters relevant to IMRRS Performance Management and staff progression / development. 
  • Leading on IMRRS risk mitigation / recording / action planning, alongside building data quality and assurance capabilities.  
  • Working closely with IMRRS Secretariat colleagues dealing with FOIs, PQs, SCS Submissions and NGO review / audit recommendations and similar correspondence, regularly to extremely tight deadlines.  
  • Actively contributing and leading where necessary on business change planning/implementation/training in ATLAS, and a range of other workstreams. 
  • Working with the senior management team to monitor staff resources and seek to maintain the appropriate compliments for each grade. 
  • Managing the workflow through the unit prioritising busy workloads in a high profile and fast-paced environment, whilst demonstrating flexibility to ensure that work is completed within deadline and to a high standard. 
  • Actively demonstrating the standards and behaviours set out in the Civil Service Leadership Statement: providing inspiration, engaging confidently and empowering others.
