My name is Matt and I work as a Principal Lead Infrastructure Engineer (Head of End User Computing) within the Enterprise Services, Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) department at the Home Office. I’ve been working at the Home Office for nearly 5 years.
Whilst it may seem like I took the traditional career route into the tech field, from secondary school to graduating with a BSc in Business Computing, I really struggled to self-fund my university degree. Working hard to finance my degree is one of my proudest achievements.
After graduating from university, I did teacher training but soon realised that I wanted to become an Engineer. This journey started at Blackpool and the Fylde College, where I started as a Junior Network Engineer and progressed to an End User Computing (EUC) Team Leader.
After almost 20 years of working in the education sector, I decided to join the Home Office because I wanted to contribute to its important work. The Home Office has a key role to play in protecting citizens and the country, which attracted me to join.
I started as a Lead Infrastructure Engineer at the Home Office and quickly realised the great expanse of people and departments I could support by delivering an excellent provision of Windows, Mac’s, Android and iOS devices. The job really grabbed my enthusiasm and commitment.
I was promoted to Head of EUC after 2 years. I enjoy developing and expanding our team’s capabilities. It’s a hub of skilled people, all encouraged to excel across a diverse range of topics. We are geographically split and work well with team members working in London, Southport and Manchester. Our team gets the chance to collaborate with many other teams when on site and also to work remotely to focus on our individual deliverables. We enjoy a great work life balance, with flexible working, full time or compressed hours options. We also have a fantastic record of retaining and rewarding our staff for excellence.
Day to day work in EUC is never dull! We support the Home Office on exciting projects. We support over 100,000 devices so user centricity is an area we really want to keep improving. We work with cyber security, collaboration teams and networking and infrastructure teams to craft various device configurations which fit the needs of the end user. It’s incredibly rewarding to share ideas and learn from our amazing colleagues at the Home Office.
We are a diverse bunch of people who try to embrace all perspectives when solutioning, deploying and transitioning services. If you have an open and growth mindset and are willing to learn new things while sharing your knowledge with others, then you should consider working for us.
