Meet Vanessa, who has recently been through our Dynamic Graduate Scheme
What is a typical day like for me as a Business Analyst in Enterprise Services?
In my current role, I manage change requests, overseeing each request from initial submission to approval. My work begins with conducting initial clarification with customers, ensuring there is a clear understanding of the scope, objectives, and funding requirements for each request. Often, this involves engaging with customers to elicit more detailed information, especially when requirements were ambiguous or lacked clarity.
One key part of my role is conducting Impact Assessments. These assessments helped identify potential implications of the requested changes, including cost recharge and other factors that could affect timelines, resources, or project outcomes. Additionally, I work closely with the Cyber Security team to ensure that security implications were thoroughly evaluated.
Collaboration is essential in this process. I work with cross-functional teams, facilitating workshops and meetings to gather stakeholder input and ensure comprehensive requirements capture. By acting as a liaison between technical and non-technical teams, I help ensure smooth communication throughout the lifecycle of each change request. This role has strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills, allowing me to contribute effectively to both individual teams and the organisation.
What attracted you to the Dynamic Graduate scheme?
Having worked within a Project Management Office (PMO), I wanted more exposure to the technical aspects of projects. My experience in the PMO gave me valuable insights into project management, but I was eager to deepen my understanding of areas like data and business analysis. I saw the role advertised on Civil Service Jobs and immediately recognised it as a great opportunity to expand my skillset.
The rotational structure of the DGS offered the perfect opportunity to broaden my skills across multiple disciplines, from business analysis to data-driven roles. The hands-on training and exposure to different technical areas within digital, data, and technology (DDaT) really stood out to me. I was attracted to working in multi-disciplinary teams and receiving ongoing support from mentors. While the competitive salary was a bonus, it was the diversity of experiences and professional development opportunities that made the scheme the ideal platform for my career growth. It offered the perfect balance of challenges and opportunities to build expertise in both technical and project-related roles.
What have you enjoyed most about the scheme?
I have enjoyed the rotational aspect, which has given me insight into three different specialist areas across three business units. This variety has been invaluable in broadening my understanding of how different departments operate and interact with one another. Engaging with different teams and projects allowed me to grow both technically and professionally.
Additionally, the mentorship and support provided throughout the scheme have been phenomenal. I have been able to train on the job, which has not only developed my skills but also deepened my understanding of the broader organisation. Overall, the scheme has provided me with opportunities to challenge myself and grow in ways I did not anticipate.
What advice would you give to graduate who is unsure about joining the Civil Service?
When I was looking for career opportunities, I wanted something that was not just a job but a platform for continuous learning and growth, and the Civil Service has given me exactly that. What makes it unique is the diversity of roles you can explore, from data analysis to project management, and the ability to move between different departments and industries within the public sector. I would say it’s one of the best decisions you could make for personal and professional development.
What really surprised me is the level of support you receive. From day one, you’re surrounded by people who are invested in your success, whether it’s through structured training, mentorship, or just having someone to turn to when you need advice. The Dynamic Graduate Scheme, in particular, has been a game-changer for me, allowing me to experience different aspects of digital, data, and technology while receiving real-time feedback and guidance. You won’t just be sitting on the sidelines; you’ll be actively contributing to projects that have a real, positive impact on society.
So, if you are looking for a career that’s not only challenging but also purposeful, I’d say take that leap – it’s worth it. You will find a place where your contributions matter, and there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
What makes you proud to be a civil servant?
I am proud to be a civil servant because it gives me the opportunity to make a positive impact on society. Every day, I am contributing to projects that have real-world significance, from improving digital services to deploying assistive technology for those who need it most. It is rewarding to know that the work I do helps improve people’s lives.
Moreover, being part of an organisation that values diversity, inclusivity, and professional development is something that resonates with me.
