We’re currently recruiting for over 75 analysts at a range of grades to work in our Home Office Analysis and Insight directorate. These roles will be based at one of our offices in Croydon, London or Sheffield, but in line with our hybrid working policy of at least 40 per cent of your time worked from the office and up to 60 per cent from home.

Although applications are invited from existing members of the government analytical professions, they are also welcomed from talented people external to those professions. As part of the recruitment process, candidates will be badged into the relevant profession, for which they will need to meet the eligibility criteria.

What do Home Office Analysts do?

Our analysts are experts, working in multi-disciplinary teams providing professional, objective and high-quality analysis and insight to ensure the department takes decisions based on evidence. The analytical professions incudes economists, operational researchers, social researchers, statisticians and data scientists, and we’re advertising roles in each of these professions now.

Analyst Team Leader Roles

We’re looking for Analyst Team Leaders in the Statistics, Operational Research, Economics or Social Research professions. This role is at the Civil Service Grade 7 level.

  • National: £52,051 min, £57,254 max
    London: £57,434 min, £63,175 max

    Successful candidates will also be eligible for a Recruitment & Retention Allowance (minimum £2,000). This allowance is kept under periodic review.

  • Depending on your role and the profession you are aligned to, your responsibilities could include the following.

    Government Social Researchers:

    • Managing and leading quantitative and qualitative research projects that enable the department to make timely, evidence-based decisions.
    • Designing evaluation and research projects, undertaking primary research and conducting secondary analysis of data.

    Government Statistician Group:

    • Develop and modernise the collection and use of data, to deliver insightful evidence to inform policy and operational decisions
    • Using large and complex data sets to model demand scenarios and provide forecasts to support critical operational decision making on the front line.

    Government Economic Service

    • The oversight and production of economic appraisal and other economic analysis carried out within the wider team. This could include production of impact assessments, economic cases and analysis to support fiscal events.
    • Seeking out evidence gaps, proposing solutions to senior colleagues, and highlighting where strategic decision could be underpinned by better use of analysis and evidence.

    Government Operational Research

    • Using large and complex data sets to model demand scenarios and provide forecasts to support critical operational decision making on the front line.
    • Designing and delivering operational research programmes, including carrying out modelling and analysis to deliver on time and to budget.

  • Essential criteria

    • Experience of leading a team to deliver innovative and ground-breaking analysis on time, to meet user needs, and overcoming any challenges.
    • Experience managing analytical projects from inception to conclusion.
    • Working with a range of teams to deliver work with impact and at pace.
    • Communicating technical concepts to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leaders.
    • Experience balancing a varied workload and prioritising tasks as needed.

    Desirable criteria

    • A background in one or more of Statistics, Economics, Social Research, Operational Research, Data Science.

We’re looking for Senior Analysts in the Statistics, Operational Research, Economics or Social Researcher professions. This role is at the Civil Service Senior Executive Officer (SEO) grade.

  • National: £37,450 min, £41,193 max
    London: £41,950 min, £46,144 max

    Successful candidates will be eligible for a £2000 Recruitment & Retention Allowance (per annum). This allowance is kept under periodic review.

  • Depending on your role and the profession you are aligned to, your responsibilities could include the following.

    Government Social Researchers:

    • Analysing and synthesising a range of evidence to present compelling summaries and narratives of knowledge regarding various social policy areas
    • Working collaboratively with analysts from other professions (e.g. economists, operational researchers) on both specific projects and wider analytical programmes

    Government Statistician Group:

    • Working with frontline services, such as police forces, to collect data and publish statistics that provide essential evidence on key public issues.
    • Using data science tools and techniques to deploy the most advanced abilities at our disposal in order to answer complex policy questions, improve operational ability and use our data in novel ways.

    Government Economic Service:

    • Options appraisal and impact assessment, including costs and benefits, value for money of interventions, and social, economic and equality impacts.
    • Working with analysts across professions and organisational boundaries to produce robust evidence for decision makers, and disseminate findings in presentations, internal reports, and ministerial briefings

    Government Operational Research

    • Work collaboratively to develop and deliver analytical projects to understand e.g. crime patterns and migration trends,
    • Exploit new database management systems for statistical collections alongside data modelling software (SQL, pgAdmin, Python, R, PowerBI, QGIS).

  • Essential criteria

    • Experience of delivering innovative and ground-breaking analysis on time, to meet user needs, and overcoming any challenges.

    Successful candidates will be eligible for a Recruitment & Retention Allowance (minimum £500). This allowance is kept under periodic review.

  • Depending on your role and the profession you are aligned to, your responsibilities could include the following.

    Government Statistician Group:

    • Using the right data collection and analytical methods, and carrying out appropriate quality assurance, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
    • Working with frontline services (e.g. police forces) to collect data and publish statistics that provide essential evidence on key public issues.
    • Communicating analytical findings and insights effectively, both in written publications and in meetings
    • Engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to understand user needs.

    Government Operational Research

    • Support on evaluating and monitoring of policy interventions;
    • Using large and complex data sets to model demand scenarios and provide forecasts to support critical operational decision making on the front line.
    • Work with team leaders to identify appropriate analytical techniques for projects, taking the lead on data management and data analysis.

  • Essential criteria

    • Experience of producing analysis that meets user needs, overcoming any challenges.
    • Experience of planning and carrying out parts of an analytical project.
    • Working as a part of a team to deliver work with impact and at pace.
    • Communicating technical concepts to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leaders.
    • Experience balancing a varied workload and working flexibly as needed.

    Desirable criteria

    • A background in one or more of Statistics, Economics, Social Research, Operational Research, Data Science.

Statistical Analyst Roles

We’re looking for Statistical Analysts to join the Statistics profession. This role is at the Civil Service Executive Officer (EO) level.

  • National: £24,883 min, £27,372 max

    Successful candidates will be eligible for a Recruitment & Retention Allowance of £1,500. This allowance is kept under periodic review.

  • Your day-to-day tasks will require you to:

    • deliver high quality statistical advice and analysis to inform debate and influence decision making
    • use a range of software packages and analytical techniques
    • work proactively with customers to identify requirements, share knowledge and information
    • be responsible for aspects of statistical production, explain and communicate your findings
    • Innovate and solve problems in data management and analysis

  • Essential criteria

    • Experience in the practical application of analysis or research with an in-depth knowledge of data sources
    • Ability to manage own workload and contribute to statistical production
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex analysis to non-specialists and contribute effectively to stakeholders
    • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver high quality statistical advice and analysis, often to tight deadlines

  • To be eligible for this role you should have or be on track to obtain by September 2022:

    • A first or second class honours degree in a numerate subject (2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Data Science or similar);
    OR
    • A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Data Science, Psychology, Geography or similar).

    Alternatively you could apply if you:

    • Have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a logbook) in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five), which demonstrates the expected skills as outlined in the GSG Competency framework.
    OR
    • Have achieved or on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship including at least 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis (via a CPD log book signed off by a manager or mentor who are members of the statistical profession).

    Please note – candidates may apply in their final year of study whilst they are still awaiting their qualification result, however, formal contracts can only be offered upon confirmation of the achievement of the relevant qualification. In the case of an apprenticeship, this includes completing 2 years work experience in a statistical/data analysis field in government as part of attaining the qualification.

Eligibility to join the Professions

There are eligibility criteria you must meet to join any of the professions.

  • You must hold or expect to gain in 2022:
    • an undergraduate degree, at a minimum of 2.1 in a social science subject, around a third of which comprised of modules on social science methods, or
    • a 2.2 degree with a postgraduate degree, in a social science subject.

    There is also an entry route if you hold a 2.1 in any subject and have relevant experience.

    Relevant experience for this role is minimum of 2 years working in applied social research setting (can be from a PhD). Social science degree subject areas isn’t definitive but could include geography, psychology, criminology.

  • A first or second class honours degree in a numerate subject (2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Data Science or similar);
    OR
    • A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Data Science, Psychology, Geography or similar).

    Alternatively you could apply if you:

    • Have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a logbook) in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five), which demonstrates the expected skills as outlined in the GSG Competency framework.
    OR
    • Have achieved or on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship including at least 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis (via a CPD log book signed off by a manager or mentor who are members of the statistical profession).

  • You must have (or expect to have in the next year) a highly mathematical degree to join GORS, which must be one of the following:
    • a minimum 2:1, or
    • a 2:2 with relevant work experience, or a postgraduate qualification.

    To meet our definition of a highly numerate degree, at least half of your degree course must be from one or more of the following subjects: maths, physics, astrophysics, operational research, management science, engineering (civil, chemical, electronic), data science, decision science, statistics, econometrics or similar.

  • • A minimum 2:1 honours degree containing at least 50% Economics;
    OR
    • A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, containing at least 50% Economics
