The Civil Service Care Leaver Internship Scheme offers an 18‑month paid placement within a central government department. It provides care‑experienced young people with the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, develop core workplace skills and build a foundation for long‑term employment. Interns will be part of a team, doing work that supports public services across the UK.
The scheme is designed to help address the employment gap faced by many care‑experienced young people. It provides:
- Paid, stable work experience
- A clear understanding of how government operates
- The chance to develop skills that are valued across a wide range of industries
- A pathway that may lead to permanent employment
We welcome the fresh insight, adaptability and resilience that care leavers bring, and recognise that this helps to shape better public services.
In some cases, there is potential for roles to be extended or made permanent, depending on performance and the availability of suitable posts.
