Operational researchers at the Home Office help decision‑makers understand complex problems and improve outcomes using evidence‑based analysis. We apply mathematical, scientific and problem‑structuring methods to analyse real‑world issues across policy, strategy and operations, supporting decisions that affect people across the UK.

Our work ranges from developing quantitative models and forecasts to breaking down complex systems into clear, practical insights. Operational researchers work closely with policymakers and managers to explore options, test assumptions and assess trade‑offs, often acting in consultancy‑style roles. We use a wide range of techniques, including modelling, simulation, forecasting, data visualisation and decision‑analysis, and work both in specialist analytical teams and are embedded in policy areas.

You’ll work on real problems with public impact, using analysis and modelling to inform decisions and improve outcomes for UK citizens. The role is purposeful, offering varied project experience, collaboration with other analytical specialists and the chance to develop deep technical expertise. We have a strong professional community and learning culture where we encourage you to grow your skills.

Operational research offers clear pathways to develop both technical expertise and leadership capability. As you progress, you may move from contributing analysis on individual projects to leading more complex pieces of work, advising senior decision‑makers and managing teams. The Government Analysis Function Career Framework sets out the range of analytical roles and skill levels across government, supporting progression into senior analytical, specialist or leadership roles over time.

You’ll need a strong interest in using analysis to support effective decision-making, with the ability to take a structured approach to complex problems. This includes being comfortable working with data, understanding its strengths and limitations, and choosing appropriate analytical tools and techniques. You’ll need to explain insights clearly to different audiences and adapt your approach as problems evolve. As you gain experience, collaboration becomes increasingly important, working with stakeholders to shape problems and challenge assumptions with robust analysis. You should work with integrity and a bring a commitment to continuous learning.
