Victoria - Home Office Careers

Hi, I’m Victoria, a Litigation Caseworker at the Home Office.

My journey began studying law at university. I then went on to start my career as a paralegal in civil litigation, focusing on insurance and personal injury. After nearly a decade in private practice, I transitioned to the Legal Aid Agency, a Ministry of Justice-sponsored organisation that provides civil and criminal legal aid and advice to help people resolve their legal issues. This was where I honed my skills as a caseworker and manager. This work led me to the Home Office, where I have thrived for the past two years.

Joining the Home Office offered me the opportunity to work flexibly, advance my career, and access valuable development opportunities, which I found appealing.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Litigation Caseworker, I handle pre-action protocol correspondence and judicial reviews, which are legal challenges to immigration decisions made by the Home Office. My role involves:

  • Analysing challenges from applicants and their legal representatives
  • Reviewing immigration decisions to ensure compliance with current legislation, guidance, and policy
  • Liaising with policy and government lawyers to ensure the legality of decisions
  • Drafting responses to legal challenges on behalf of the Home Secretary

What I enjoy most at work

I enjoy the variety my role offers. I deal with different types of immigration decisions, from visitors’ visas to asylum cases, and tackle unique and interesting legal challenges every day. I also value the opportunity to collaborate with various departments within and outside the Home Office.

The Home Office provides ample opportunities for learning and development. I have benefited from shadowing colleagues in different departments, deputising for colleagues within litigation operations, and enhancing my skills in drafting, delivering training, and mentoring others.

Why join the team?

I encourage anyone considering a career with the Home Office to apply. The work is varied, fast-paced, and challenging. The flexible working hours and opportunities for development and career progression make it a great environment for those looking to grow in the legal sector.
