Greg - Home Office Careers

A digital development programme with purpose

I spent 15 years in digital marketing, working across roles in social media, SEO, web development, and content creation, and found myself craving something more meaningful. I had built a solid career, led talented teams, and developed a passion for writing and improving user journeys. But despite the success, I felt a growing disconnect between my day-to-day work and my desire to help make the world a better place.

The Home Office Digital Development Programme (DDP) offered something I hadn’t seen elsewhere – a commitment to learning, a fast-track into a tech career with purpose, and the chance to work on projects that directly impact people’s lives. I was drawn in by the structured development, the mentorship, and the opportunity to help users through digital solutions. The Civil Service pension was a nice bonus, but it was the mission and the people that won me over.

Since joining, I’ve been genuinely amazed by the level of support. My line manager not only oversees my progress on the programme but also checks in regularly on my wellbeing. My placement mentor helps me navigate the day-to-day work, ensuring I’m gaining the right experience and working towards my goals. And my career mentor has helped me shape my long-term aspirations, offering guidance and highlighting opportunities I might not have considered on my own.

One of the most valuable aspects of the DDP has been the dedicated learning time. I’ve been able to further my formal training in content design, data and analytics, stakeholder management, prototyping, user research, accessibility, and even line management. The on-the-job experience has been first-class. I’ve been trusted to work independently, contribute meaningfully to teams, and take ownership of my work. Every team I’ve joined has welcomed me as an equal.

I feel more confident than ever about my future in the Government Digital and Data profession. The DDP has given me the foundation I need to thrive, and I can clearly see a path forward. I hope to stay within the Home Office and work towards becoming a Principal Content Designer, leading user-centred design across a business area.

For anyone considering a career in digital – I can’t recommend the DDP enough. It gives you the skills and experience you need to excel in government.
