Across the Home Office, we are transforming the UK border and immigration system. From the moment someone begins planning their journey, through to crossing the border and living in the UK, we are building a system where automated clearance can become the default for the majority of legitimate travellers.
Travellers will still need a valid passport, but immigration status and permissions are increasingly being held digitally. Through products like eVisas and Electronic Travel Authorisations, travellers can move with confidence – with near real-time confirmation of their status. As of June 2026, we have issued over 10 million eVisas and more than 20 million Electronic Travel Authorisations, marking a major milestone in the delivery of a fully digital border.
This shift isn’t just about improving the passenger experience. It’s about fundamentally changing how the border works and keeping the UK secure. By using data earlier in the journey, we can build a clearer picture of who is coming to the UK before they even arrive, enabling smarter decisions based on pre-travel checks.
At the border itself, innovation is accelerating. Technology is making journeys faster, smoother and more intuitive – while ensuring security is strengthened at every step.
But technology is only part of the story. This transformation is being delivered through collaboration across digital, policy, operations, security and communications teams – working together to design, test and scale solutions that operate at national and global level. This is also a cross-system effort, bringing together expertise from across government and industry to deliver an ambitious, transformation programme helping to shape the future of the UK border.
